Blackfin Tuna (Thunnas atlanticus)
Family Scombridae
Description: comparatively small, dark colored species; when freshly caught, the blackfin has prominent gold bars (which quickly fade after death) vertically along sides. Long dark pectoral fins. Similar fish: part of tuna family. Where found: found only in the western Atlantic from Cape Cod to Brazil. Size: 20-30 pounds. Remarks: food includes fishes, squids and crustaceans. It is one of the most common items in the diet of the blue marlin. Spawning occurs off southern Florida from April to November. Flesh is dark, but considered very edible.
